Interviews with 40 parishioners help determine the structure and themes of five church hall meetings in which stories of religious experience are told by people from distinct cultural backgrounds. Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities.  Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering.
