I proposed that doulos be translated slave based on the Pauline assessment and modeling of this biblical doctrine.  Relevant data was gathered using a mixed-method approach to equip PR to parallel two motifs or models: slaves of Christ with slaves to sin who support the prosperity gospel heresy.  The slave language was challenging as PR consists of offspring of American slaves. Yet PR leaders agreed to participate in this project to dispel misunderstanding and encourage an examination of biblical teaching on this avoided topic. Study of mentoring practice, particularly as modeled by Jesus and Paul, revealed the biblical prominence of this leadership development approach. Educational literature review identified the best training principles and practices for adult learners, specifically church planters. Qualitative research interviews were conducted with seminary administrators, field mentors, and mentored seminarians now active in church planting. Field education documents from twelve evangelical seminaries were studied. Using a combined approach that incorporated what was learned from a survey of pastors and what was learned from personal study, a three-month reading program was prepared. Four expository sermons were preached, utilizing what was gleaned from the reading program. Surveys were administered to six members of the researcher's parish after each preached sermon. Some 150 D.Min. graduates of these institutions rated twenty-six leadership characteristics (taken from the example of the life of the Aposte Paul) as to their importance as qualities of a church leader annd the perceived effect their training had toward developing them. This project identifies the issues of preaching readiness, develops a readiness formula, and provides for the preaching pastor a tool for structuring a personal readiness routine.  The research design combines an analysis of preachers in the Bible, a content analysis of homiletic literature, a readiness journal, dialogical interviews with preaching pastors, and a self-study instrument for preaching readiness field-tested by ten preachers.
