It can be difficult for a layman to fill the role with confidence and joy. This project was designed to develop and orientation process that is both meaningful and manageable in a layman's life. The research included a survey of pastors in similar churches, a survey of participants before and after the retreat, and a study of literature on church leadership development. Of these two, the office of elder is the one principally charged with the leadership of local churches.  The identification and selection of said elders is a key challenge that this project seeks to address and facilitate.  The project execution saw the creation and implementation of a workshop in two congregations focused upon the biblical standard of an elder's qualifications, roles and tasks. This project examined biblical and extra-biblical texts, contemporary leadership and management materials on servant leadership and input from churches operating with the Carver policy governance model for their governing board for application to the elder board of First Evangelical Free Church of Maplewood, Minnesota. Category sets of governing policies and elder selection and screening materials were developed. It needs leaders who recognize God's calling and can effectively implement that calling in today's church.  This project presents a practical elder leadership model developed and implemented by Olathe Bible Church in shepherding its congregation.  The model was derived from biblical investigation and case studies of large, multi-staff, elder-led churches.  The scriptural findings and case research were applied to create a relevant, practical, visual model of shepherding leadership for use in elder-led churches.
