Volunteers took part in an intensive eight-week Christian caregiving course.  The course was designed to equip members with the basic skills necessary to provide competent pastoral care.  Three evaluative tools were used as the primary data gathering instruments: a caregivers' survey, a caregivers' interest questionnaire, and the Christian caregivers' course evaluation.  Results indicated that participants had the passion, gifts, and skills necessary for a care-oriented ministry. Rather than helping pastors to find the right answers, attention is given to helping pastors ask the right questions in cross-cultural grief care. This paper examines the biblical and theological foundation of 'pastoral care,' then traces the development of the pastoral care worker system developed at First Christian Reformed Church in London, Ontario. The writer interviewed a random sampling of both pastoral care workers and members of the congregation to determine to what degree the pastoral care given and received was accepted. A 'Training Manual for Pastoral Care Workers' was developed and is included in the paper. The study determines that the pastoral care system developed at First Christian reformed Church in London respects the traditional understanding of the Office of Elder as accepted in reformed churches, but expands the options for ministry by involving others who have spiritual gifts for pastoral care ministry. The writer used a specific strategy of introducing innovations that helped the congregation accept this non-traditional pastoral care delivery system. The primary tool for relating to all treatment patients--the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is discussed from a biblical perspective. The three basic approaches to assisting patients solve their addiction problem--psychological, physiological, and theological are presented. The psychological and physiological approaches are mentioned to provide a brief exposure to them. The theological method is covered in detail. This is the primary approach of the pastor working in treatment.
