Five congregations (United Methodist, United Church of Christ, Baptist, nondenominational, and Disciples of Christ) from Chicago and Lansing, Michigan, studied current trends in stewardship, salaries and benefits for clergy and lay staff, and outreach ministries.  The project developed new stewardship programs to encourage these congregations to re-establish themselves as servants to their communities. Strategic planning is the model used to intervene in the on-going life of this urban congregation that envisioning for the future may take place. The model utilized a sermon series and small group Bible study to increase the congregation's ability to perform long-term visioning. Consequences of the qualitative analysis indicated the intervention resulted in increased awareness of vision, related to spiritual calling in the lives of the small group and the congregation. This strategic plan began with designing the building to be user friendly and effective in this culture. Transitional strategies prepared the congregation for change. The design and program were driven by Cornerstone's mission. Seven key events provided the structure for marketing and inviting new people. New systems and teams were created or renewed in preparation for this new era of ministry. A lay mobilization process and assimilation method was put into place to integrate people and build disciples. A staffing plan was implemented in the process.
