Members of the vestry ask lay leaders to write statements about their ministries and their faith. They then meet and pray with each layperson twice. Then in a second session the vestry and leaders rewrite the ministry and faith statements. In this effort a small group from Fairhaven meets six times with a group from an African American congregation to identify racial eight concerns in pastoral care: evangelism, substance abuse and addiction, discipleship, psychological needs, youth at risk, parenting, prisoners, and racial tension. In 24 sessions these participants engage learning experiences framed by Scripture, a discipleship manual, and a Character/Skills Assessment Test, all designed to stimulate spiritual growth, to renew the influence of the church as a societal change agent, and to enhance spiritual leadership ability.
