The sermon was seen as a literary art form and focused on elements like the use of story, metaphor, evocative symbol, and mythic language.  It used a questionnaire to examine the responses people make to sermons. Commentaries for each Sunday's set of readings for the three-year cycle were written.  Three periods of in-ministry testing of a congregation demonstrated  that the majority of congregational respondents benefitted from emphasis on the Old Testament message, and that lay and peer advisory group respondents grew in their appreciation of that message and its integration in their faith-life. The author developed seven guidelines, which deal with grace, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, God, creation, neighbor, and Bible.  He used lay and clergy advisory groups, interviews with knowledgeable persons, perusal of major works in the field, and personal experience to develop and test these guidelines and practices based upon them. Improvements were measured through beginning and ending completion of the Jay Hall Conflict Management Survey; a comparison of participants' beginning and ending survey scores with a control group of eleven pastors who completed the survey at similar intervals; and participants' final reports on the accomplishment of goals stated at the beginning.  Seminar work included a consideration of 1. identity issues for the pastor; 2. theology and ministry; 3. theology of the church; 4. theology of conflict; and 5. the pastor's role as manager.  Conflict case studies of participants were also shared and evaluated. Two-fold research design: (1) narrative background to the generation's history and experience in the decades of the fifties through the mid-eighties; and (2) survey of religious experience and attitudes of 229 respondents, aged 25-36. Data from 59 questions analyzed by 10-church rank; religious types; six sub-samples; male/female; and born-again/not born-again.
