Lay and clergy leaders in congregations must find ways to share key pieces of not only denominational identity, but also fundamentals of the faith. As well, we must embrace ways of sharing our individual and collective spiritual narratives with newcomers so that they can both connect with our larger spiritual narrative and tell their own. This paper describes the efforts of one congregation's attempt to work with key lay leaders to help them identify pieces of their Christian and denominational identity, to train them in telling their own spiritual narratives to each other, to help them experiment in interacting with and welcoming newcomers (offering those newcomers threads of identity and narrative), and to see what connections, if any, happen between the leaders and the newcomers and in the larger congregation. This thesis tests the proposition that lay leaders will feel more comfortable,competent, and authoritative in welcoming and integrating newcomers into a congregation if they are grounded in core components of denominational identity, can articulate their own faith narrative, and have engaged in Action-Reflection experiments/exercises with newcomers within the context of a formational small group. This project engaged key lay leaders in a multi-stage formation program, tested their interactions with newcomers and their perceptions of themselves in doing so, and discovered that formation activities alone produced limited, mixed results in improving relationships with newcomers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716721375838208,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:06:53.983Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:33:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:24:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"61d017e9-f240-4a76-a6fd-85474e502fcd","accessControl_ssim":["b6c19b3b-daac-47d3-a8dd-988f5a13acd7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the ministry of hospitality, including twelve intentional hospitality practices and strategies with emphasis on faith formation, outreach and welcoming new members at the chapel of the cross, Chapel Hill, North Carolina"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:33:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:59:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["57d72713-baf8-4abd-b998-2889e10f7802"],"hasLease_ssim":["a231f567-3faf-4374-aa3f-7cfaa20a1f1f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Virginia Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Day, Barbara"],"publisher_tesim":["Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)"],"subject_tesim":["Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church membership","Theology, Practical--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project tells the story of hospitality ministry at the Chapel of the Cross with emphasis on twelve intentional practices and strategies including worship, new mission statement, open communion, blessing gay unions, global missions, welcoming newcomers, new parish fellowship hall, hospitality strategic planning, funeral hospitality, children with disabilities, ABC sale and faith formation. To explore the role of denominations and discipleship, this thesis analyzes the relationship between traditional and contemporary forms of discipleship and denominational vitality. Specifically, it examines the role of the Advent Christian denomination in the lives of a group of worshippers at Northside Community Church. Using adult learning theory and social constructivism, this study reveals how one group of believers has constructed their organizational identities within the Advent Christian denomination and how relationships with other disciples who proclaim to follow Jesus Christ impact their system of beliefs. Utilizing Northside Community Church as an example, this thesis demonstrates that denominational churches can thrive and succeed in the 21st century if they are willing to pursue commonalities rather than a focus on doctrinal differences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128953127174144,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:07:59.969Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:26:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:11:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bbe39bd3-70e0-45e0-aa8a-124904f36798","accessControl_ssim":["b909cf94-6e22-454f-8fe9-198c969f1dd8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Covenant marriage in a contract culture: a return to covenantal roots by addressing the plight of Christian marriage in America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:26:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:32:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["64b16c78-0b78-45ce-a859-9b9378a91610"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa1365d2-9759-4890-9ba7-308ed82062fe"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Virginia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David T Gortner"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey H Raymond"],"publisher_tesim":["Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)"],"subject_tesim":["Covenant theology","Families--Religious life","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In a culture that values convenience over commitment and views marriage as a contract rather than a covenant, marriages are in trouble. Even people who claim the Christian faith struggle with building healthy, happy, wholesome marriages that will endure for a lifetime. This deterioration of marriage tears at the fabric of the nuclear family, which also affects the health of the church family. In an attempt to curb the weakening marriages in my ministry setting, I proposed to lead a marriage retreat which focused on marriage as covenant, and which equipped couples with communication skills and conflict resolution techniques. My premise was that people can find hope for their marriages when they embrace God's ideal, which means living together in a covenant relationship and equipping themselves with proper relational tools. We examined how covenant theology and the theology of communication can inform our marriages. In addition, couples learned how to reveal their thoughts and feelings to their spouse more effectively, and how destructive poor communication can be to any relationship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129193003614208,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:11:48.733Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":18,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Thesis","hits":1,"label":"Thesis"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Adrian L Dixon","hits":1,"label":"Adrian L Dixon"},{"value":"Dawna D Wall","hits":1,"label":"Dawna D Wall"},{"value":"Day, Barbara","hits":1,"label":"Day, Barbara"},{"value":"Doris Buchanan Johnson","hits":1,"label":"Doris Buchanan Johnson"},{"value":"Duncan H Johnson","hits":1,"label":"Duncan H Johnson"},{"value":"Frieda L Malcolm","hits":1,"label":"Frieda L Malcolm"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Congregations--Self-evaluation","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Self-evaluation"},{"value":"Feminist theology","hits":1,"label":"Feminist theology"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Spiritual formation","hits":8,"label":"Spiritual formation"},{"value":"Spiritual life--Christianity","hits":4,"label":"Spiritual life--Christianity"},{"value":"Episcopal Church","hits":3,"label":"Episcopal Church"},{"value":"Mission of the church","hits":3,"label":"Mission of the church"},{"value":"Christian life","hits":2,"label":"Christian life"},{"value":"Church work with youth","hits":2,"label":"Church work with youth"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":19,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)","hits":19,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":19,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2013","hits":14,"label":"2013"},{"value":"2012","hits":3,"label":"2012"},{"value":"2014","hits":2,"label":"2014"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":19,"label":"Miscellaneous"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":18,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Doctor of Ministry","hits":1,"label":"Doctor of Ministry"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary","hits":19,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":19,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":2,"next_page":null,"prev_page":1,"total_pages":2,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":10,"total_count":19,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":true}}}
