By doubtful is meant all things upon which the Bible makes no pronouncement, either by way of acceptance or prohibition. The method of study was, first of all, to pursue all occurences of the term 'conscience' in the New Testament, discerning what it is and how it functions.  Secondly, the two major passages of scripture on the subject were exegeted (that is, 1 Corinthians 8-10 and Romans 14:1-15:7, which deal with the Christian attitude toward doubtful things).  It was concluded that where the scripture neither condones nor prohibits a Christian's involvement in an activity, he has the freedom to participate in good conscience. A second assumption which served as a basis for the structure of this manual was that certain communiction principles are valid for the preaching event.  The communication principles valid for the preacher to be concerned with are structure, argumentation, and persuasive procedure. Consequently, it is essential to utilize accepted communication techniques in the homiletics classroom for use in training aspiring counseling.  It examines: 1) how a pastor views the counselee(s); 2) the difference between pastoral care, pastoral counseling and non-Christian therapy; and 3) what is distinctively 'pastoral' about pastoral counseling in the parish and elsewhere.  Part 2 of the paper deals with four actual counseling cases.  In each case the unique theoretical aspects of pastoral counseling are applied practically. These cases deal with: 1) depression, 2) family systems, 3) exhibitionism, 4) schizoid personality and family systems.
