But what does that change look like in the life of a believer? How is that changed developed? What part does the church play in the process of transformation? This dissertation explores the relationship between what pastors believe about personal transformation and how they approach the spiritual development of parishioners. While considering the wisdom of current writers and researchers, the study focuses on the thought and practice of 50 churches in the San Francisco Bay area of California and more specifically on five sample churches that are creatively exploring how to develop believers to spiritual maturity. The study concludes that there is a great need for a clearly articulated theology of change and for ministry designs that bring that theology to life. This dissertation is intended to contribute to the larger, ongoing conversation of spiritual formation. The process of the study included interviews with denominational executives, a study of 2 Timothy 3 and 4, and two surveys of the effectiveness of the pastors in the Pacific Conference of the Evangelical Church. A general prescription for improving preaching effectiveness and personal prescriptions for improving preaching effectivness were given between the two surveys. The properly trained and prepared church is the perfect culture for recovery from addiction to occur. Assuming that 'all truth is God's truth,' this dissertation is designed to gather science that is compatible with scripture, and integrate as a theology of addiction and recovery. Neuroscience, as well as psychological and sociological truths, helps demonstrate the importance of the church in addressing this issue. The dissertation is multi-method: interdisciplinary, integrative (science and theology) and ethnographic (addict and recovery cultures). The study used an integrated approach, combining archival and survey methods. Five theoogical issues are explored as they inform partnership. They are the Trinity, the purpose of God (missio Dei), the body of Christ, the gifts of the Spirit, and the church -- both local and universal. A survey was used to have attendees of the CAR Consultation reflect on these theological issues in the context of partnership. The author researched spiritual formation theory and Native American culture and Christianity. The author used a qualitative research method for gathering data. Personal interviews from pastors faced with this dilemma, plus questionnaires and interviews from his family, churches and communities, where he pastored with his disabled wife, played a significant role in his research. As well, an archival research into the effects and challenges facing caregivers and their families added to his insights. From his experience of training lay pastors and leaders, he found that training lay people for evangelism would be an effective way for evangelism.  To prove the hypothesis, key materials were searched, 37 informants were interviewed and 189 lay people from 5 local churches were trained. This study shows seven dimensions of Christian missions in correspondence with a sevenfold mission of Christ.
