The author developed and deployed a seminar for ascertaining whether an increased understanding of the security of the gospel (i.e., union with Christ) could help Christians engage their troublesome emotions and assist them in the dissolution of negative affect (guilt, fear, or shame). Cultures that are community-oriented consider sin in light of relationships. 'Sin' is a behavior or attitude that alienates a person from those whose relationship he values; that alienation is experienced as shame.
