Rather than appearing to condone the abusive actions of a few by not openly discussing the subject, the church needs to give voice to those women as one means of helping them find their way into healing. The project summarized the major issues that affect these women, and offered ten Bible studies designed to assist them, addressing matters such as anger, guilt, shame, repentance, and forgiveness both from a biblical and a psychological perspective. The mentoring sessions was designed to bring hope, healing and wholeness to women of diverse ages, and backgrounds. The hypothesis was that mentoring would shift participants from brokenness to wholeness. The project was implemented through collaboration with women abiding at women's shelter, and the Executives Director. Participants engaged in six-weeks of mentoring. The research methods used to test the hypothesis and evaluate results were measured utilizing qualitative analysis. Factors were isolated that contributed to the sustainability of such homes.  This qualitative study included case studies of two sustainable and two non-sustainable homes.  Workers from each home were interviewed with queries relating to how the home was organized, managed, assessed, and resources were received and utilized.  Chief findings related to how sustainability was viewed throughout each home beginning with strategic planning, how it was organized, and functioned. This pseudo experiment took place by use of a spiritual formation group that included both abused and non-abused women. This was a six-week group. Concepts of submission were explored. Pre and post assessments were utilized to assess changes in attitude around this concept. To gain an understanding of how abuse of women has become widespread, the project director researched and provided current statistics on abused women. Educational and social work professionals were enlisted to review materials utilized in the development of the workshop. Texts were utilized to explain the cycle of violence. Dynamics, myths, and legal issues of abuse were explored. The project enabled the staff members to advocate for and empower women entrapped in abuse. Case studies provided sensitive information on responding to victims of abuse. Teaching methods used allowed staff members to explore the dynamics of abuse. Through ignorance, lack of training, or misinterpretation of scripture, many pastors encourage unhealthy submission to abusive spouses, offer inappropriate Christian platitudes, and advocate for the 'sacredness of the family' at the expense of a woman's health and life -- compelling women to stay in abusive marriages, thus hindering them from receiving the help they need. Recent research indicates that many of these pastors agree that they are ill-equiped to minister to abused Christian women, and some genuinely desire training and ministry resources to help the women in their congregations.
