The author suggests that what has been traditionally termed and understood as the 'Black Church' is not a sufficient descriptor of the experience of African, African-American, and Caribbean people coming together as one community of faith. Thus, the project seeks to lead the congregations to embrace their cultural diversity using a new paradigm: 'The Africultural Church'. The term 'Africultural' is used to describe a multiethnic faith community of persons of African ancestry, which strives to be wholly Christian and multicultural, yet celebrates its Africanness. It is understood that issues arising form ethnocentrism may challenge this new community. Specifically, there may be cultural distances and stereotypes that must be overcome to effectively engage in ministry. To this end, the project explores the cultural consciousness of the three congregations with respect to worship practices, mission and ministry, and lay leadership; best practices derived from these Africultural ministry settings; and the role of the pastor in leading the congregations to more faithfully embrace their cultural diversity. A model of community transformation is also proposed, which uses Bible study and a study circle process to raise cultural consciousness and promote diversity. Liberation theology, John Wesley's notion of a 'catholic spirit' and personality development theory are theological and theoretical foundations for the model. Using this model, the project seeks to identify held stereotypes and cultural conflicts in one congregation and move that congregation toward the affirmation and wider embrace of its cultural diversity. From that experience, further implications for pastoral leadership and ministry strategy in Africultural communities are drawn."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714856870346752,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:15.852Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:55:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f89e2e52-50c1-4206-962f-350b9c08ca1e","accessControl_ssim":["20ece8fd-0369-4c01-b846-bd30a2c2e35d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of healing and deliverance ministry in African-American and African immigrant churches with recommendations for new church development in Ghana"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:55:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:13:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c6100721-c4ec-4a6d-ab37-99cf94e19732"],"hasLease_ssim":["1a9aa660-6174-4c7e-a733-a327d6a1c9b0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["H Stanley Wood"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Ghana"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Martin B Nabor"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Healing","African American churches","Theology","Spiritual healing"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Fundamentalists engage in prayer and exorcism among their members. The goal of this project is to critically examine, define, and detail one of those new methods called 'Prescriptive Preaching' whose goal is to provide its listener with explicit and helpful actions, prescribed and exemplified in a specific biblical narrative, which empower and equip the listener to cope with a relevant life issue. This methodology is currently being successfully used in the preaching life of St. John's Congregational Church, a 1,300 member black church comprised mainly of this new generation of black churchgoers. Through reflection on the creation, delivery, and evaluation of eight project sermons, the integration of residency course work, and committed discussion on the same with St. John's members in a Parish Project Group this project seeks to discover and establish the guidelines, goals, theological, biblical, and homiletical foundations and exegesis, and preparatory process that informs the methodology of prescriptive preaching. The successful results of this project not only produce and present the entire methodology of prescriptive preaching but also disclose that prescriptive preaching is an effective and sensitive response to the dynamic changes and sermonic expectations of this new generation of black churchgoers that is rooted in the tradition of black preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e84517db-6a02-4e61-8d84-c85c5905f6d5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127234578219008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:41.033Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:49:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:45:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cfffa214-7ed9-40da-a653-719c5b489cf7","accessControl_ssim":["2e60251b-48d6-4974-88ad-d20d2fff9cfb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Establishing a small group ministry in the African-American church through the empowerment of small group leaders"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:49:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:05:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1342deae-90db-4fc3-a268-70a203ec8f53"],"hasLease_ssim":["81e11f1d-4351-4ab8-9a0b-b6ed8f3758e8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ed Wishart"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Earl C Simpson"],"publisher_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American churches","Small groups","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project involves a training program implemented in an African-American church that was designed to equip potential small group leaders with the competencies and personal commitment to become effective and empowered small group leaders.
