My intention in this thesis is to combine expressionistic imagery with African American celebrative preaching. Most Swedish sermons are cognitive and didactic and without celebration. Preachers tend to concentrate more on law than gospel. After such a sermon there might be some quiet time for reflection. Through imaginative expressionistic celebrative preaching I will bring to Swedish preaching color and joy, which will help the listener experience the assurance of grace. In this thesis I have defined expressionistic preaching and described the African American celebrative sermon and its theology. I have also presented imaginative homiletics and its theology and presented a psychological model of interpretation of the imaginary and the mystic experience. In my thesis I have made a descriptive study of the effects in the listeners after an expressionistic celebrative sermon and described the problems with celebration in a Swedish context and given a psychological explanation for the absence of instantaneous celebration. My conclusions are: The expressionistic celebrative sermon is a colorful and positive experience. Swedish listeners experience the assurance of grace, but they don't celebrate as a group. Celebration is expressed differently in the African American context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133300496007168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:05.942Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:34:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"33c56b53-0794-4b41-a2a7-da73fe849fe8","accessControl_ssim":["2b16fb41-ff73-4eb6-aa93-a7da0bf7f52d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A place at the table: an African American preaching from margins to mainstream"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:34:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:38:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f416a7a2-c4b8-42b7-867c-2db2988e068a"],"hasLease_ssim":["df7358c2-268c-4c4a-8ff6-a5fef63bb03a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Connie M Kleingartner"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Andrea L Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","Clergy","Race relations","Laity","Intercultural communication"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author, who is an African American Lutheran, begins by showing evidence of racism in our society and the church. The specific emphasis was on the education of African American youth. The method of reach and study included: 1. Reading from various sources to gain thoughts, material, and ideas for a sermon series to be preached on the church's role in educating children. 2. Forming a focus group of four to eight members of Metropolitan, consisting of public school teachers as well as Christian educators and lay members. The group discussed the impact of the sermons and shared observations. 3. I preached a series of messages on educating children and volunteering for Vacation Bible School. This series led up to our 2006 Vacation Bible School. I utilized different preaching genres (i.e. expository, narrative/didactive, and topical). The author reviewed a comparison of volunteers from 2005 and 2006. New volunteers were surveyed to see if the messages had any bearing on their motivation for working with the schools. An exit discussion was held with the focus group which aided in the assessment of the project. Suggested materials and insights from other preachers who utilized motivational models in their ministries to galvanize volunteers to be instrumental in the lives of youth were also used. As a result of the author's efforts, sermons and a host of other objectives and energies within the church, the congregation recognized the need for volunteers. In the conclusion of the matter, a myriad of activities and motivations influenced volunteerism. While one should never underestimate the power of the pulpit and the preaching moment, especially in the African American religious experience, preaching is only one facet of the faith strategy. Other methods of motivation and vision-casting, working in concert with proclamation, are effective means of facilitating social awareness and ministry involvement."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["795851c5-e081-4353-9c00-2c554dd1d015"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134940480405504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:43:09.954Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:38:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:48:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1d081670-0617-40d0-aaf3-774d2406d305","accessControl_ssim":["522bc49f-5062-4efe-a606-ec0509a10609"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Empowerment by leadership through preaching to effect social change in the black community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:38:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:59:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4c3a41b9-d6cd-4862-86a2-454abd262b7e"],"hasLease_ssim":["32233574-07de-4031-81f5-8d4389378649"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Terry Thomas","Ricky A Woods"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Louvenia Ward"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (Dayton, OH)"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","Church and social problems--Baptists","Berean Missionary Baptist Church (Brooklyn, NY)","Social change"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to empower members of Berean Missionary Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York to participate in ministry to effect social change. 'Let the Church Say Amen' is a comprehensive evaluation of Baptist beliefs and how the African American church celebrates history and identity through its preaching and worship experiences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e84517db-6a02-4e61-8d84-c85c5905f6d5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127200591773696,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:08.621Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:49:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:40:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b1c3e228-0682-468c-986c-e01f18ee77ef","accessControl_ssim":["1d544908-1961-4a61-9795-c48fee5573d6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prescriptive preaching: preaching to the new generation of black churchgoers"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:49:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:15:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["abe4e5de-9050-4422-8a46-0c1449fd1b88"],"hasLease_ssim":["97e5330f-cb30-427d-be95-2b877bbaa04c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Alfloyd Butler"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Howard-John Wesley"],"publisher_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","African American churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There is a new generation of black churchgoers attending the new black church, a post-desegregation, pot-literate, post-Soul generation whose dynamics and sermonic expectations have also given birth to new homiletical methods. The goal of this project is to critically examine, define, and detail one of those new methods called 'Prescriptive Preaching' whose goal is to provide its listener with explicit and helpful actions, prescribed and exemplified in a specific biblical narrative, which empower and equip the listener to cope with a relevant life issue. This methodology is currently being successfully used in the preaching life of St. John's Congregational Church, a 1,300 member black church comprised mainly of this new generation of black churchgoers. Through reflection on the creation, delivery, and evaluation of eight project sermons, the integration of residency course work, and committed discussion on the same with St. John's members in a Parish Project Group this project seeks to discover and establish the guidelines, goals, theological, biblical, and homiletical foundations and exegesis, and preparatory process that informs the methodology of prescriptive preaching. The successful results of this project not only produce and present the entire methodology of prescriptive preaching but also disclose that prescriptive preaching is an effective and sensitive response to the dynamic changes and sermonic expectations of this new generation of black churchgoers that is rooted in the tradition of black preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e84517db-6a02-4e61-8d84-c85c5905f6d5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127234578219008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:41.033Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:45:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:08:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ab4f5dab-ca0b-4812-b260-143bc6cd6a0b","accessControl_ssim":["2e18b545-bc7f-439e-8acb-f72676534a7a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A program to train African-American ministers in biblical preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:45:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:04:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f7e7dd6d-e247-47c1-80f1-e00d9b5d40f9"],"hasLease_ssim":["4807eacf-c170-4c2b-b019-3696da3da026"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Frankie Rainey"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy J Wilbert"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","Expository preaching","African American clergy","Bible Way Community Baptist Church (Irving, Tex)","Clergy--Training of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to design a training program and to train associate ministers in biblical preaching at Bible Way Community Baptist Church in Irving, Texas. The project leader will combine the mechanics of biblical preaching with historical and cultural experiences of preaching in the African-American church. This project will produce a handbook for biblical preaching in the African-American church. The handbook will include all nine lessons, handouts, exercises, and an annotated bibliography. The handbook could be used to train associate ministers in their local church, a retreat, or in self-help. I contend that the common experience shared by African-American women and the rhetorical and literary traditions from which they arise bind them together as preachers, establishing a Womanist homiletical tradition. My analysis of sermons included 46 sermons in manuscript form, on audio tape and some on videotape, preached by African-American women from a broad spectrum of denominations and geographical areas. I will show how Womanist preachers use rhetorical strategies, such as sharing personal experience, personal story or 'testimony' in their preaching and ways in which the Womanist preacher 'gathers everyone at the center,' without hierarchy or patriarchy, where there is grace and acceptance from God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128192063373312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:55:54.162Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":36,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
