Many churches are closed systems when it comes to dealing with its young. These 'closed systems' focus on the youth of their parishioners but fail to venture out into the community to those that are trapped in poor communities or ghettos. There is a widening gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' in all of society and particularly amongst middle and lower class blacks. How does a middle class black church in the inner-city reach out to lower class youth surrounding its church? How do we empower the laity of a congregation to effectively reach unchurched youth? These are the questions that I will explore in this professional project. The vehicle we will use to get from Hip Hop back to the 'saving station' in the church is a contemporary outreach ministry called JAM (Jesus and Me). My goals were to 1) provide a place where young people could be transformed and feel safe, 2) create small groups that would allow the students to share more intimately and experience growth along with accountability, and 3) equip volunteers, both adult and youth, to carry out ministry to unchurched youth in the inner city. As a result of this project lives were transformed, volunteers were empowered to become ministers, and a bridge was built from the church into the community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130339301654528,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:01.928Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:28:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:15:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b239a653-e6ab-4112-b10e-70bbc511193f","accessControl_ssim":["6fb9ce5a-c7f4-4d34-b93d-426a6fc7a01e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing African American leadership for the 90s and beyond"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:28:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:16:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["01c9aea9-afb3-434b-9c0d-df052d2fe488"],"hasLease_ssim":["68f7115a-f9bb-47f8-8b3b-c860380f154a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Walter T Davis"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["L P Lewis"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","African Americans","Allen Temple Baptist Church (Oakland, Calif)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The focus of this project is to develop African American pastoral leadership with a theologically and holistically sound training curriculum to fill the need for responsive, caring leadership especially in urban African American communities. The main parts of the funeral event such as the service, wake, the committal service, and the repast, are examined as powerful tools of evangelism. In addition, the importance of preaching, singing, and praying during the funeral event have been explored as additional spiritual tools for evangelism. The role of the pastor and laity are explored as care givers offering an open door of opportunity for being evangelists. The ultimate objective is to develop strategies to retain young adults in the 'fold' and attract young adults who are outside the church. There are two assumptions involved in this project: (1) statistics show a decline in young adult attendance over the last two decades; and (2) the overall African American Church has been weakened by this loss. It is a supplementary assumption that young adults face personal crises connected with the transitional cycles that occur during this period. A course of action for the church and church leaders is formulated from this project's research. It integrates and outlines biblical and theological bases that make action imperative. The methodology involves interviews with various church leaders in order to ascertain successful programs. Views and opinions of young adults 'in'as well as 'out' of the church are also utilized to discover what causes departure. Conversely, information garnered also highlights activities that serve to preserve and nurture young adults in the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131890454888449,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:41.223Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":34,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
