The context of this ministry model is a private school at Gravel Run Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, VA. Students were the same age, grade level, culture, and received similar courses of study. Student and parent interviews were also done to obtain deeper insight. The acknowledgment of illiteracy is the first step toward the empowerment of African Americans.  The methodologies used to achieve these goals were surveys, pretests, posttests, questionnaires, and qualitative research.  There were six, ninety-minute sessions which focused on adult literacy, economic and spiritual empowerment.  At the conclusion of the six-week sessions, all the adults demonstrated an increased ability in reading competency skills.
