Based on characteristics and functions of biblical persons specifically designated as 'servants of the Lord', the servant-model ministry includes the following dimensions: political leadership, prophetic address, priestly mediation, and suffering with the afflicted.  Energetic leadership by the church through congregational pastors and elders in preventative and rehabilitative programs is implied. The project was carried out in the setting of a general hospital based alcoholic rehabilitation program.  A group, led by a hospital chaplain, was set up to help patients work steps three, four, and five which are the spiritual core steps of Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve steps. The author concluded that chemical dependence is multifactoral, thus the use of all tools, both human and divine, are necessary to constitute a comprehensive recovery program. Biblical considerations dictate a moral approach, at least in explaining the initial process of becoming an alcoholic. Medical evidence indicates strongly the accuracy of a disease model. Three pastoral diagnostic variables - communion, repentance, and grace or gratefulness - of the seven pastoral diagnostic variables designated by Paul W Pruyser are found to be significant themes in the life stories of these recovering alcoholics and are used effectively as counseling parameters.  Four of these alcoholics in long-term sobriety are interviewed in oral and written sessions.  Two of them in short-term sobriety are seen in either short- or long-term counseling.
