For adolescents from a variety of family backgrounds results indicated that both parent images contributed to the God concept.  This God concept is consistent with the developmental stage functioning of the patient.  The patient experiences communication with the God concept as simultaneous with the combination of communication with both parental images.  Tillich's perspectives on judgment, acceptance and transformation as well as his concept of the God beyond God are brought to bear on the studies. It is the first stage of the psychotherapeutic process, and can help to locate the specific nature of a person's guilt, remorse, depression, and sadness. Confession, along with a call upon some power greater than one's self, plays a vital part in the recovery process of the alcoholic.  It is a central thrust of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.  The pastoral counselor is a therapist but also a pastor, a representative of God. The element of confession becomes sharper in pastoral counseling because of the pastor's dual role. These adult-children of alcoholics have been left with psychological and physical scars.  This project draws on research in the field of alcoholism and adult-children and on personal experience. It seeks to define who the adult-child is; the dynamic and the effects of the alcoholic and the co-dependent spouse on the child; the myths, messages, rules and roles within the alcohlic family.  The latter part of the work presents the church as family.  It profiles the alcoholic priest who is an adult-child, the church's response to alcoholic clergy, the role of church authority and denial.
