The method of research integrates material from the author's experience of twenty-two years of military service, thirteen years of ordained ministry, and experience from personal involvement in Adult Children of Alcoholics.  Short-term prevention methods suggested are regulating the supply of alcoholic beverages, shaping drinking practices directly, and reducing environmental risk. An experimental group was exposed to six one-hour alcohol education sessions over as many weeks.  A control group in a comparable nearby church received no education.  Utilizing identical anonymous pretests and posttests for both groups, it was determined a significant change did take place in the attitudes of the experimental group, but not in the control group. A control group met for an equal amount of time without the adventure-based component.  The elements of risk, fear, trust, communication, and danger were experienced in a non-shaming, supportive environment and served to reframe the students' childhood trauma of life in an alcoholic family.  Family systems theory and St Paul's 'body' analogy were illustrated in this study. By means of a survey among 1,800 clergy in Minnesota, it was found that many clergy came into ministry from an extreme family system. It describes how alcoholism is a shared disease, affecting not only the identified alcoholics but also the systems to which they belong. Using family systems theory, the study suggests parallels between family and church.  It shows that just as a family in the process of maintaining stability incorporates dysfunctional behavior, so too does the church. Since current materials were deficient about giving care to alcoholics and their families, one session about alcoholism and other materials were added to the training.  Alcoholism was defined as a multifaceted disease with physiological, psychological, sociological and spiritual components. Of interest is the God-image, one of many other object relations created by a child while in relationship with the alcoholic parent.  This image of God persists throughout life unless either events or personal effort causes it to change.  Based upon this image, a person forms characteristics of God that profoundly affect the way she/he relates to God and the environment.  Each subject was asked questions from modified and abbreviated Rizzuto 'Family' and 'God' questionnaires.  After answering questions about each parent, the subjects were asked to mark sixteen word-pairs in accordance with how they related to each one.  Finally, they were asked questions about God and marked sixteen identical word-pairs. Included are the theological foundation, role of the church, description of the needs of adult children of alcoholics and the implications for ministry.
