In accepting the third step the alcoholic states that he or she has made a decision 'to turn my life and will over to the care of God as I understand Him.' The author tested the alcoholics with Gorsuch's Adjective Check List and Justice's Family and God Survey. The data revealed that fourteen alcoholics out of the eighty-three tested had harsh God-images. Church judicatory personnel too frequently respond as if alcoholism is a matter of will and moral weakness. This posture impedes recovery and contributes to the downward spiral of the clergy alcoholic and his or her family. The project offers a model for ministry which helps church judicatory personnel and local church clergy persons become actively involved in the recovery of clergy alcoholics. The model incorporates four specific issues related to recovery: identification, intervention, treatment, and co-dependency. The pervasive nature of the disease includes the co-dependency of the alcoholic's entire family. It is the first stage of the psychotherapeutic process, and can help to locate the specific nature of a person's guilt, remorse, depression, and sadness. Confession, along with a call upon some power greater than one's self, plays a vital part in the recovery process of the alcoholic. It is a central thrust of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The pastoral counselor is a therapist but also a pastor, a representative of God. The element of confession becomes sharper in pastoral counseling because of the pastor's dual role. In today's society confession is a neglected, but vitally important, resource in these fields and in the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133701158993920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:23:28.045Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:31:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:13:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0bf77a4b-259c-44c9-9020-b3c0c5e2557a","accessControl_ssim":["a0bd0c0c-14b2-435c-951e-9f03465edfdb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Adult-children of alcoholics reclaiming the past: a priest's perspective"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:31:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:27:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2f2bfc3a-e0b9-49b3-91c7-17687e3fac35"],"hasLease_ssim":["0e8b936b-4fa2-4876-b4c8-a08b6047fae3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mark Richard Lane"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Alcohol","Church and social problems","Alcoholism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Over twenty-two million adults in this country have lived with an alcoholic parent. It seeks to define who the adult-child is; the dynamic and the effects of the alcoholic and the co-dependent spouse on the child; the myths, messages, rules and roles within the alcohlic family. The latter part of the work presents the church as family. It profiles the alcoholic priest who is an adult-child, the church's response to alcoholic clergy, the role of church authority and denial. The project explored the need for such training and the reasons for the high rate of alcoholism and the growing number of suicides. It discovered that the Cherokee pastor is the key to helping his people. The author examined the biblical background for crisis counseling with alcoholic and suicidal persons and laid a theoretical foundation to equip pastors to minister to such persons. The major emphasis of the project was the procedures used in selecting and training a core group of pastors in strategic areas of the Cherokee Nation.
