The family of the alcoholic was seldom seen at the clinic on other than superficial levels; even such limited observation demonstrated a vicious circle of anxiety and frustration.  Parish ministers and family doctors often come in contact with alcoholism but fail to recognize it.  This paper defines alcoholism, the nature of the disease, the effect on the individual and his family and the social and economic cost of it for our nation. It focuses on the specific alcoholic and his history together with the growth of the disease, seeks to pinpoint causes with reference to its early growth in the family of reference and its fruition in the family of procreation, discusses alcoholic life patterns in the marriage relationship and its effects on the children. A research questionnaire was devised and administered to 97 male alcoholics and/or drug addicts. This project focused on eight areas: general background, early childhood, chemical usage, heterosexuality, masturbation, homosexuality, sexual difficulties, and general questions.  The study demonstrates that adult males who are alcoholics and drug addicts have significant sexual dysfunction both when using chemicals and also during periods of sobriety. The study uses questionnaires and interviews to obtain information from patients in treatment on admission, at discharge and following discharge.  The expectation was that there would be a decrease in spiritual experience and religious practice prior to treatment and a decided increase following.  The questionnaires substantiated this expectation. Alcoholism is described as 'a chronic illness, psychic or psychosomatic, which manifests itself as a disorder of behavior,' and 'that exceeds customary dietary use of compliance with social customs of the community and that interferes with the drinker's health, or the social or economic functioning.'  it is America's number four health problem, but Black America's number one health and social problem. In the chapter 'From the Roots to the Vines,' the project analyzes the use of alcohol in pre-colonial Africa as a convivial beverage for celebration and how the Triangle Trade became 'a geometrical maze' for Blacks with slavery, alcohol, and profits as partners. The project builds on a qualitative analysis of theological and clinical research on priestly identity, and the etiology and treatment of the disease of alcoholism.  Through the development and use of a clinical questionnaire seventeen clinicians from a major treatment center give recommendations for treatment and the implications for the wider diocesan community.  Involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous is stressed as part of this holistic response. All involved in the research believed their intimacy increased, they communicated on a different level, and their ability to resolve conflict increased. However, marital satisfaction only improved in couples where just one spouse was an Adult Child of an Alcoholic. In both were, their marital satisfaction did not improve.
