The heart of this project involved a group of young men who said they believe the gospel, and agreed to apply Hiebert's critical contextualization model to their use of corn beer. Even simply renting a space to an Alcoholics Anonymous group in a church building is not enough. The relationship of complicated mourning and alcoholism is explored.  The 'thick description' of Geertz, the 'method of correlation' of Tillich, and the 'intercultural spirituality' of Lartey are used to examine three case studies; concepts from Bowlby, Rando, Masterson, Hammer and Hammer, and Brown; and theological perspectives from the Bible. Twenty-three alcoholics and non-alcoholics were interviewed and the content of their responses was analyzed. Alcoholics had a higher number of alcohol-related losses and exhibited chronic and delayed grief reactions.  Alcohol suspended the grieving process.  Sobriety allowed the grief process to be completed. Using Richard Lawrence's God Image Inventory and the Bell Object Relations Inventory, the author obtained scores from AA members who had over two years of experience in AA and a sample of recently sober alcoholics in various detox units who had little or no exposure to AA. Since spirituality has been shown to be a significant factor in recovery, this program was designed with two prongs: instruction (10 one-hour sessions) and community service (35 hours), which provided ways to enhance the DUI participants' spiritual well-being.
