The relationship of complicated mourning and alcoholism is explored.  The 'thick description' of Geertz, the 'method of correlation' of Tillich, and the 'intercultural spirituality' of Lartey are used to examine three case studies; concepts from Bowlby, Rando, Masterson, Hammer and Hammer, and Brown; and theological perspectives from the Bible. Twenty-three alcoholics and non-alcoholics were interviewed and the content of their responses was analyzed. Alcoholics had a higher number of alcohol-related losses and exhibited chronic and delayed grief reactions.  Alcohol suspended the grieving process.  Sobriety allowed the grief process to be completed. Using Richard Lawrence's God Image Inventory and the Bell Object Relations Inventory, the author obtained scores from AA members who had over two years of experience in AA and a sample of recently sober alcoholics in various detox units who had little or no exposure to AA. An experimental group was exposed to six one-hour alcohol education sessions over as many weeks.  A control group in a comparable nearby church received no education.  Utilizing identical anonymous pretests and posttests for both groups, it was determined a significant change did take place in the attitudes of the experimental group, but not in the control group. A control group met for an equal amount of time without the adventure-based component.  The elements of risk, fear, trust, communication, and danger were experienced in a non-shaming, supportive environment and served to reframe the students' childhood trauma of life in an alcoholic family.  Family systems theory and St Paul's 'body' analogy were illustrated in this study.
