By examining Puritan and Indian relations in seventeenth century southern New England, this study demonstrates that Puritan theology fostered attitudes and a government policy destructive of Algonquin people in New England.  The failure to develop a just policy toward Native Americans in turn brought Puritan theology into conflict with itself and hastened the collapse of Puritan rule.
