A methodology of in-depth interviews with three 'post-anorexic' (physically recovered) women was the foundation of this qualitative study.  A coding table linking shame, female identity, and the mother-daughter relationship allowed for quantification of the data. The results indicated deep shame around female identity, although the anorexia appeared more an effort to break free from a shame-bound self than a symbol of it. The project reviews Bruch's theory of primary anorexia nervosa and her approach to treatment.  It illustrates psychodynamic issues with case material.  The author abstracts theological implications from Bruch's theory and psychotherapeutic treatment approach.
