It argues that Christian community is not the effect of faith in God, but is the manifestation of that faith.  The author makes the case for a relational faith.  Theology rather than psychology or sociology is the basis for understanding congregational life.  A planning group assessed the needs of this congregation.  A set of proposals was generated.  They included retreats, meals, a photo directory, etc.  A questionnaire was used for evaluation. A program was implemented that motivated new members to be involved in regular Bible study, exercising spiritual gifts, support of church finances, and personal witnessing.  Four cyclical classes, each addressing one of the areas noted and operating autonomously, were developed to provide the new member with immediate access to the assimilation process. Over 500 visitors pass through the church every year.  Most are seeking a new church.  In spite of this, attendance has remained flat for five years. Intentional involvement of new people should increase their chance of staying with the church.  Changes were made in purpose, vision, organization, and leadership. After one year, questionnaires were answered by those who stayed and left after attending for a while. This project was designed to answer that question and to be an instrument used by other churches in Appalachia to enhance the meaning of church membership.  The project utilized a thirteen-week discussion manual and video.  The course dealt with those topics of interest determined by members who were surveyed within the author's context of ministry. Once there, if warmly welcomed, they will complete a visitor registration card whereby prospect information can be obtained.  The method of study used was a combination of observation, numerical comparisons, and surveys. Eight weekly sessions were conducted involving twelve recent candidates for membership. Individual pre-training and post-training interviews with questionnaires were conducted to provide information as to any changes in interest, attitude and/or understanding of the meaning of church membership. Training sessions included a grounding in the six major dimensions of the Christian faith and the meaning of living the gospel.  Through this project it was not possible to determine whether the training process would or would not prevent these new members from becoming inactive.  The new members definitely increased their understanding of the faith. Interest and enthusiasm was engendered for more study of scripture and the mission of the church. Chapter 1 shares the background of the project.  It gives the history of the church, the demographics of the area and the purpose of the project.  Chapter 2 presents the biblical, theological and historical perspectives of the use of education to assimilate.  Chapter 3 deals with the sociological factors of assimilation and how they would apply to the local church.  Chapters 4 and 5 cover the actual project.  The results of the project were the training of the Sunday School leadership in different ways to minister to newcomers. The challenge of designing and carrying out a new member assimilation program aimed at introducing new members to the full range of opportunities for members to participate faithfully is the focus of this study.  The theological principle undergirding this study maintains that the church is ideally a human community that attracts and receives new members, seeks to introduce them to its shared values, norms, memory, convictions and actions so they may participate fully in its life and work as 'citizens in the community of faith.'  This study examines citizenship from biblical, historical and sociological points of view.
