A significant percentage increase in the membership rate and assimilation rate of newcomers was projected.  A control was developed by analyzing three consecutive years of assimilation data on church attendance, giving, small group and ministry involvement of all new visitors.  Similar data was collected on all new visitors in the test period.  A comparison showed a 33 per cent increase in both the membership rate and assimilation rate of newcomers.  Both hypotheses were probably confirmed.  Some anomalies were seen in the results. The thesis used to test the research question was: Increased organizational commitment results when an individual's personal meaning fits with organizational mission. The hypothesis that poststudy commitment level scores would be higher than prestudy commitment level scores was satisfied. Ten New Testament principles of evangelism form the basis for evaluating the three case studies as well as providing the theological orientation for the strategy.  The three-step strategy takes a chronological approach to the task of local church evangelism. Of the nineteen prospective members who attended the class, eleven wanted to join a ministry and eleven wanted to join church membership. The author used a method of research that incorporated an experimental and a control group.  Eleven teaching sessions, a pretest, and a posttest were used to accomplish this goal.  The results of the pretest and posttest showed an increase in knowledge and a positive change in participation and attitude in the experimental group. The evenings were divided between basic Bible study and personal sharing. A sponsorship model was tested where hosts from the church made regular contacts with newcomers over a period of four months. Success in integration was measured by objective and subjective measures of involvement and belonging.  The sponsor contacts with newcomers were evaluated according to quality of contact.  The hypothesis was that success in integration would correlate with contact quality. Chapter 2 presents theological, sociological, and psychological ideas that are foundational for ministry with new members. Chapter 3 summarizes the preliminary study conducted with active, inactive, and former members.  It also details preparatory work with deacons, Sunday school leadership, and the church at-large to lead the church into this ministry. Chapter 4 presents the design and implementation of the new members orientation class which was the central element through which new members participated to become better assimilated.
