The researcher implemented a diversity workshop, cultural heritage awareness night and focus group.  A questionnaire was used to develop qualitative data to evaluate the project.  The final product was a 'compendium of connectivity' which identified how current members may see new members as empowered, connected, or disconnected. A primary premise of this research is that ethnic churches -- in this particular case, Brazilian churches -- have the potential of greatly helping immigrants to adapt to their new environment and to counteract the stress of the immigration experience, assimilation and adaptation (introduction and chapter one).  This work was developed following a systemic approach and guided by three nurturing questions that originated from Eldin Villafañe's 'hermeneutical circle of social ethics' (clarification, conceptualization and confrontation). Pastoral actions and reflections on dealing with the issues related to this study emerged from our understanding of systematic theology and the investigation of other pertinent sources (chapters two and three).  The goal of the learning team and the exercise called 'hexagon process' was to look at how these Brazilian churches can develop ministries that will create positive and lasting results, and the possible scenarios where the ethnic churches can intervene (chapter four). When all three of these components become daily repeated experiences the believers are assimilated. This project has four main components. First, a biblical study intended to determine the biblical assimilation principles that effectually work in believers' lives. Second, a literature study to discover the theological factors that affect the assimilation process of believers into the functioning body. Third, two case studies of American leading churches through survey questionnaires and onsite interviews and observation. Fourth, the results of the studies are the functional factors in formulating the assimilation principles for the Chinese Bible Church of Jakarta, Indonesia. From the assimilation and church growth literature review and the biblical study ten significant assimilation principles were selected for this study. Each principle was present in the first century church (Acts 2:42-47) and in the life of Christ. The project director facilitated a four-week seminar with the deacons using small group study, large group discussion, and assignments outside the class to encourage group participation in the completion of the new member program design.  The deacons, then, engaged in leading a group of new members through a three-hour new member assimilation course. The deacons developed a greater understanding and awareness of the need for new member assimilation. The four-step assimilation strategy consists of attending New Orientation Class, joining a small group, completing Discover class, and getting involved through Servant By Design.
