The project designed a curriculum of eight training sessions and five strategy-development sessions.  The entire church heard a series of eight sermons on the life and mission of the church.  The project studied an experimental group and two control groups, using a pretest and posttest to measure cognitive changes in the groups.  Statistical analysis of the tests reported a change in Control Group A and a significant change in the experimental group. Innovations that may increase effectiveness may be planned and implemented when small task groups are empowered to lead these processes.  Nine church leaders concentrated on assimilation of prospective members.  At the end of one year, evaluation revealed that 49.3 percent of first-time visitors to the church had assimilated to the point that they identified the church as their church of attendance or belonging. Both the descriptive survey method and the experimental method were employed in the project.  An assimilation scale was developed and used to measure a person's level of assimilation.  An eight-week new members seminar was designed to assist the new members. The seminar addressed eight characteristics of an assimilated church member.  Two hypotheses were established. To overcome this problem, a newcomer assimilation curriculum was developed, based on biblical understanding of a searching God, Jesus as teacher, and the apostles as guides to new life, theological principles gained from the history of religious education, and systems theory. It was carried out in Mokdong Methodist Church for three months. The project sought to motivate present church members to be intentional about including new members.  The Sunday worshipping congregation was included through presentation of related topics. Membership classes addressed strengths and differences between people of urban and rural backgrounds.  The church programming board created assisting strategies to integrate new members.  The report outlines biblical and theological bases for integrating newcomers, with sermon and class content suggestions. Prior work in this field has not taken into account the research that has been undertaken regarding employee commitment/satisfaction in the disciplines of organizational management.  The hypothesis tested in this product seeks to confirm, in the context of the local church, such research. A survey was developed to score degree of incorporation and assess the effectiveness of various programs through which new members could become incorporated.  Results were crosstabulated by gender, age, and scored degree of incorporation.  Analysis was done by comparing the results of members who joined by profession of faith, transferred from other United Methodist congregations, transferred from other denominations, and associate/affiliate membership. Content analysis was used to evaluate data gathered from interviews of six original members and twelve new members who joined after the merger.  Problems revolving around fears of anonymity and loss of intimacy affected the assimilation of original members. The making of new friends was important in deciding whether or not original members or new members remained active. Confrontations in newly formed groups inhibited the assimilation process. Factors impacting assimilation were determined.  A ministry was designed.  A group of sponsors was enlisted and trained.  A test of the ministry was conducted.  Evaluation of the ministry was performed by means of descriptive survey methodology, simple statistical analysis, and critical pastoral reflection.  New members who had been sponsored showed a statistically significant increase (p = less than .1) in assimilation for three of the seven indicators tested.
