The project for the study was an experiment in participatory preaching.  A control group selected from the congregation of the First Baptist Church (Elberton, Georgia) evaluated the effectiveness of four sermons preached at the church.  The sermons were examples of participatory preaching. The group participants wrote and shared their life histories. From these personal narratives we discovered a common dramaturgical pattern within our congregation. The priorities of the newspaper's various roles were explored by examining polls of Baptist editors and the Index's board of directors.  A profile analysis of the newspaper's constituency showed an alarming absence of young readers, posing a threat to The Index's future vitality and influence. The history of the racial separation, current church practices, and conditions are used to inform the study.  Methodology includes literature search, a survey of those in bi-racial churches, and interviews with pastors and church members.  Gleaning isights from the project process, a suggested strategy is developed to maintain a growing, bi-racial church. It develops that planning strategy using the following assumptions: 1) lay people in the church are equipped for leadership; 2) lay people in the church desire to be a part of the planning process; 3) when there is a broad base of involvement in the planning process, there is more involvement in the implementation of the plan; and 4) when more people are involved in planning and implementing, it is more likely that goals will be reached.  The project is developed in cooperation with the Church Council members of Forest Avenue Baptist Church, Redmond, Oregon.  It develops goals and objectives for the 1986-87 church year.  The method of planning is adapted from that recommended by the Inter-Agency Council of the Southern Baptist Convention. The program included didactic sessions, role play exercises, a field trip to Oklahoma City, and a planning retreat in Lamasas, Texas.
