On the biblical foundation of forgiveness and reconciliation, which is God in Christ reconciling the world to himself, the project reviews the history of human hate, sin, and rebellion that is repeated once more in 'ethnic cleansing' and war in the former Yugoslavia. Some 'moderate' Baptist churches have abandoned it as an absolute requirement for church membership.  Theoretical considerations (biblical, theological, ecumenical) underpin such abandonment. Yet practical considerations (psychological, sociological, and ecclesial) contend even more compellingly for retention.  This project champions immersion as an almost absolute requirement for membership in Baptist churches.
