The Bible's oral structure shaped its teachings in conventional patterns which influenced and pervaded Scripture thoroughly. As all ancient writings were composed to be read aloud, these balanced, general symmetrical literary shapes functioned as mnemonic and interpretive aids to an aurally dependent people. This study tested and found highly successful the use of these visually portrayed literary macro-shapes in engaging and enlivening faith among Bible study participants in a modern Presbyterian church. An examination of currents in nineteenth century American religious history and responses by African Americans reveals an intense effort at identity that is true to both the experience of being Christian and being African. The project develops the social context that gave rise to the independent African-American church, and focuses on the dissimilarities of African Americans in the areas of biblical identity and the conversion experience. The hermeneutical challenge is to recognize the ambiguity of the African-American church as a separatist institution justified in its existence in light of the pain of African-American communities. Though the independent church movement institutionalized an ambiguous relationship to the evangelical tradition, the independent churches were clear about the need for freedom. The contemporary issue is not justifying a separate institutional existence, but seeking a hermeneutic that is both Christian and is true to the African-American experience."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132201445752832,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:37.807Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:21:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:12:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d72c96d6-a8ac-4898-8744-cd69f07da033","accessControl_ssim":["ce4065d9-6119-4e43-b0e7-1bcab643066a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping lay people to interpret the gospels in their literary environment"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:20:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:17:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["62cfc8f0-86fc-463b-a87d-8bf42fe3749c"],"hasLease_ssim":["39254d06-56f1-4101-ba2b-96365629a8e9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce C Corley"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James D Starr"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible.
