From this collective and interactive configuration a critical discrimen was created as a heuristic device to analyze contemporary hermeneutical and homiletical traditions to reveal which concepts might be appropriated and the limitations of those traditions in constructing an inclusive, emancipatory (Ana)baptist homiletic of community. They find little comfort and identification in scripture once they have given up the quest for children because in scripture the barren woman eventually receives God's blessing, conceives, and bears a child. This project reviews the situation of biblical women, the texts in which barren women appear, and the possibility of reframing the idea of barrenness in a way that is helpful and supportive. A survey of such women provides beneficial detail. Contemporary Christian loss of mythic, metaphorical thought patterns in favor of literal, rationalistic ways of thinking threatens the survival of the people of God and divests the Scriptures of their power to transform. The project uses secular story and biblical story in a 'sandwich' technique borrowed from the Gospel of Mark in order to restore an imaginative, metaphorical perspective to Christian consciousness so that biblical narrative can be reclaimed as story.
