With these methods the project assists these women in discerning the influence of patriarchy on their personal and faith stories and offers them an opportunity to encounter Jesus through biblical stories interpreted from a feminist perspective. Biblical narratives are stories and should be read as literature.  The concerns of literary analysis are the concerns of biblical narrative interpretation.  The practicum/project has established that the narrative approach is preferred to make the Scripture 'live' and become a part of one's relationship with God.  However, the historical-critical approach can be used in isolation from the other.  The decision an interpreter must make is which approach is primary. This thesis was tested by conducting a six-week Bible study on selected passages from Matthew for the Administrative Board and Council of Ministries of Clonmell United Methodist Church.  As a followup to this study, the annual planning session for the church was conducted and a new mission statement was developed with visioning and goal-setting. This study tested and found highly successful the use of these visually portrayed literary macro-shapes in engaging and enlivening faith among Bible study participants in a modern Presbyterian church. The premise is supported by analyzing Schleiermacher, Henry, Barth, McFague, Sobrino and Schüssler Fiorenza. The study proceeds by giving a brief biographical sketch of each theologian, then her/his approach to the revealed nature of Scripture is described and an example of his/her use of Scripture is analyzed. The outcomes of each approach are demonstrated by using them to interpret John 4. An examination of currents in nineteenth century American religious history and responses by African Americans reveals an intense effort at identity that is true to both the experience of being Christian and being African.  The project develops the social context that gave rise to the independent African-American church, and focuses on the dissimilarities of African Americans in the areas of biblical identity and the conversion experience. The hermeneutical challenge is to recognize the ambiguity of the African-American church as a separatist institution justified in its existence in light of the pain of African-American communities. Though the independent church movement institutionalized an ambiguous relationship to the evangelical tradition, the independent churches were clear about the need for freedom.
