The primary skills taught and practiced are the discovery and development of the big idea of a biblical passage. The first seminary guides students through the process of identifying the subject and complement of a biblical text and developing them into the big idea. The second seminar focuses on preaching the big idea with contemporary relevance and applying big idea preaching to different genres of the Bible. To answer that question, 70 pastors of the Southern Illinois District, Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod were asked if they ever used a pre-sermon Bible study to help the hearer listen to the sermon. A seven-week pre-sermon Bible study was developed and taught based on four filters of hearing. Those filters were logos, ethos, pathos, and community. A post-sermon survey was given and separated into two categories, those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study and those who did not. The results were fairly conclusive that those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study had a greater connection to both the sermon and the preacher. Study materials included the primary preaching text, along with exegetical and devotional reflections.  Some participants studied the material individually. Others studied it collectively (before a meeting, blogging, small group).  Sermon surveys with both quantitative and qualitative questions measured their responses. The surveys indicated that those who studied the texts ahead of time had a more positive listening experience. What may appear to some as a crisis of ambiguity about the nature and place of the Ten Commandments in the public and religious spheres in America could be regarded as an opportunity for clarity on the part of preachers.  The study addresses the need for Church of God preachers to engage in cultural dialogue through a fresh preaching of the Ten Commandments.  The literature review surveys scholarly works regarding the context and meaning of the Decalogue in the Old and New Testaments, the meaning of the Commandments in light of a corrosive postmodern value system, and views of scholars and preachers regarding how to preach the Ten Commandments. The study included interviews with six Church of God Movement preachers, with the goal of learning about their experences related to the place of the Decalogue in the pulpit.  The study asked how the preachers handled the Decalogue, exposited the Commandments, and trained congregations in
