The project leads towards three sermons to be composed by interacting the disciplines addressed by those courses.  The sermons will draw from two or three (instead of the accustomed one) lections for a Sunday in Epiphany, Lent and Easter, 1988.  All of life's services want to be stimulated, motivated, excited, equipped and directed by worship's exercises and experiences. Indicative preaching encourages a forthright, declarative sermon presentation that allows for clarity and theological reflection all at the same time.  In this theory the function of the herald (kerygma) is to proclaim more than to exhort.  Proclamation allows room for the individual listener to reflect, integrate, and respond to the Good News. Indicative preaching thus seeks to draw people into an intimate encounter with the Almighty, without rousing internal defense mechanisms that block communication.  In this approach to homiletics it becomes an exegetical expectation for the preacher to maintain the integrity of the biblical literature, including its mode.  This means adapting sermon preparation to reflect the true nature of the text. The project also presents guidelines for indicative preaching for the parish pastor and a series of six sermons. Study of biblical texts, prior to their development in sermons, afforded pastors and congregations opportunity to become aware of contextual gaps.  A sermon review process allowed for evaluation of the gap-bridging process. It examines the use of 'story' in preaching; examines the homiletics of George Buttrick, Fred Craddock and Eugene Lowry as a basis for comparison with biblical character preaching; shows the details required for using this form of proclamation; and demonstrates the intense Scriptural reflection which character portrayal requires.  The practicum was conducted over a three-month period using members of the Arapaho United Methodist congregation to provide evaluation on the presentation of two characters: Jacob and Joseph of Nazareth. Eight sermons were preached from the letter of James.  A pretest and posttest on the book revealed an increase in factual knowledge after the sermon series.
