Although this undertaking concentrates on ministers in the Middle District Baptist Association, the author realizes the same challenges exist among untrained clergy elsewhere. Leading ministers to reach an informed understanding of text as they investigate selected text through questions pertaining to the literal, the historical, and the contextual analysis of a passage contribute to informed understanding. Through an exegetical guide developed as a result of this project, ministers learn to analyze scriptures in a meaningful way that better prepares the preaching of the Gospel. Primary research in this project proves that untrained clergy can benefit from preparation in authorial intent. This project sought to increase the effectiveness of teaching and preaching Hebrew narratives in the local church via a five week seminar to equip participants in discovering the central thrust of Old Testament narratives. Goals and objectives were established, relevant data gathered, analyzed from volunteers. An analysis of the data revealed notable improvements in the participants' overall effectiveness in teaching narrative. If the biblical writers purposefully used rhetorical devices in their writings, then it seems to be a preacher's obligation to deliver sermons incorporating literary devices. The Book of Esther was the focus of this study, and was analyzed and interpreted from the literary/rhetorical point of view. This project focused on a group of preachers who gathered to engage scripture in creative ways and then to continue practices individually. The research involved a twelve-week study of a lectionary group of preachers, interviews of numerous preachers outside the group, and journal entries. Yet, most Christian workers still use literate methods even when working in oral contexts. This research focuses on biblical storytelling among oral learners. The primary research strategy was the multiplication of storytellers through intentional training and the collection of verbatim reports of their field experiences. Storytelling was found to be superior for knowledge transfer and for bypassing resistance to the gospel, and consequently more than 200 new congregations were planted.
