Through the use of a pre-test and post-test survey, this project quantitatively examined the effectiveness of long-term sermon planning to effect spiritual growth. Pastors fail to preach the Old Testament because it has cultural, linguistic, and hermeneutical challenges. Pastors preach it incorrectly when they fail to connect it with Christ. The purpose of this study was to understand the Old Testament sermon preparation process employed by pastors who preach Christ-centered sermons. Christ-centered Old Testament preaching is often neglected, and therefore the subject is relevant to every Christian preacher of God's word, and by extension to all congregations. This study employed a qualitative design using a semi-structured interview process with six preachers from various Presbyterian and Baptist denominations. Using a Bible written in a commoner-friendly language is essential for the effective work of contemporary ministry. However, those churches that are willing to make the change from the KJV to a contemporary version are faced with a lack of guidelines and principles to help them navigate the transition. In an effort to fill this void, this study examined the change process of a Baptist congregation which transitioned from the King James Version to a modern-language Bible as its primary worship text. The findings confirmed that transitioning from the antiquated wording of the KJV to a contemporary-language version was beneficial to the members and the ministries of the congregation. To answer that question, 70 pastors of the Southern Illinois District, Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod were asked if they ever used a pre-sermon Bible study to help the hearer listen to the sermon. A seven-week pre-sermon Bible study was developed and taught based on four filters of hearing. Those filters were logos, ethos, pathos, and community. A post-sermon survey was given and separated into two categories, those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study and those who did not. The results were fairly conclusive that those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study had a greater connection to both the sermon and the preacher. She decided to look more closely at the process that takes place between reading the text and up to the point of delivering the sermon.  She read the literature to look for different methods to increase and release creativity.  She gathered a group of respondents to listen to and afterwards discuss three of her sermons which she was to prepare using these methods.  Her goal was to see if they could tell any difference in her way of preaching before and after the usage of these methods.  After applying the different methods to her sermon preparation, the focus group could not see any difference, and the author still had her anxiety. Preaching a lament opens listeners to deal with the real issues that burden them.  This thesis proposes specifically the reclaiming of the psalms of lament in preaching following the homiletic design for celebration of Frank Thomas.  With this integration the preacher is both the leader of lament and celebrant of God's presence. The writer advocates a trifocal hermeneutical method (analysis, synthesis, and application). The writer develops the category of application by researching approaches used by scholars in related fields, surveys methodologies and critiques them. An application worksheet for pastors to develop sermon application from Old Testament narratives is presented. The process utilizes four steps: investigation, significance, transformation, and enablement. Study materials included the primary preaching text, along with exegetical and devotional reflections.  Some participants studied the material individually. Others studied it collectively (before a meeting, blogging, small group).  Sermon surveys with both quantitative and qualitative questions measured their responses. The surveys indicated that those who studied the texts ahead of time had a more positive listening experience. What may appear to some as a crisis of ambiguity about the nature and place of the Ten Commandments in the public and religious spheres in America could be regarded as an opportunity for clarity on the part of preachers.  The study addresses the need for Church of God preachers to engage in cultural dialogue through a fresh preaching of the Ten Commandments.  The literature review surveys scholarly works regarding the context and meaning of the Decalogue in the Old and New Testaments, the meaning of the Commandments in light of a corrosive postmodern value system, and views of scholars and preachers regarding how to preach the Ten Commandments. The study included interviews with six Church of God Movement preachers, with the goal of learning about their experences related to the place of the Decalogue in the pulpit.
