Biblical communication reveals both objective and functional relevance. Objective relevance consists of mechanical and topical relevance. To communicate relevantly, preachers must: a) comprehend the hermeneutical issues associated with connecting biblical truth with modern life, b) understand the listeners' milieu, c) apply objective and functional relevance techniques, and d) develop systems of intentional feedback. Homiletical and cognate literature confirm the importance of these elements. Parabolic interpretation has changed over the centuries with parables no longer viewed as allegory, but now understood as metaphors with extended meaning. In review of the purpose, Jewish source, nature, and language of parables this project examined how contemporary preachers can use Jesus' parables to communicate the message of God's Kingdom. The central question was, 'How does one recapture the punch of the parables in a modern setting, when the points of references are unfamiliar to today's audiences?' The project focussed on the reactions and evaluation of a select group of people from the congregation who heard two different methods of preaching on select parables.  One method incorporated the homiletical suggestions of David Buttrick;  the other method was a retelling of the parable in a modern setting.
