Moral injury is gaining awareness across all branches of the armed forces. However, it is not a new concern; it is as old as humanity itself. Learning how to identify and care for moral injury is a developing process that mental health and clergy professionals are seeking guidance to better address needs. I am a member of the US Navy Chaplain Corps and wanted to know what this community knows about moral injury and what would this group of peers want to learn about providing care to those facing moral injury. After conducting interviews of seven Navy Chaplains, seven themes were found through reflective thematic analysis: (A) US Navy Chaplains are strategically placed and appropriately trained to care for moral injury. (B) Foundation of faith directly impacts ability to cope with moral injury. (C) Spiritual and emotional pain is common among those suffering from moral injury. (D) Peer support and trusted sharing are an important part of moral injury healing. (E) Pastoral counseling and listening are vital to moral injury support. (F) Confession is a helpful part of moral injury healing. (G) Finally, strengthening spirituality protects against potential morally injurious events. Navy Chaplains are asking for more specialized moral injury training, because they are embedded close to those who are most impacted with morally injurious events. They are also asking for moral injury detection tools, counseling skills, and training briefs that will enhance their ministry outcomes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1822156243298418688,"timestamp":"2025-01-24T18:33:29.713Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:26:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:26:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2eee9d07-368d-4058-8858-5812edb92c25","accessControl_ssim":["47dcc73c-fa08-4ba4-9d53-b40742db0ea6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Development and Evaluation of a Theological Commentary and Expository Sermon Series on Jonah Implementing Pericopal Theology and a Christiconic Hermeneutic"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:26:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:29:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fd653277-8bbd-4c27-8779-a5ae901d5588"],"hasLease_ssim":["d5239c41-2677-4df7-96ff-7d735a56f716"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen J. While much scholarly attention has been paid to the former facet (i.e., the move from text-to-theology), much less has been given to the latter (i.e., the move from theology-to-application). One homiletician, Abraham Kuruvilla, has recently attempted to fill this void by articulating and demonstrating a methodology through which a preacher can, with confidence and clarity, lead the people of God from the Bible to its intended, and thus binding, application. The aim of this research was to explore the effectiveness of his proposed theology and hermeneutic for the identification, development, communication, and reception of biblically-founded, theologically-valid, and hearer-relevant application.Following the example of Kuruvilla, a theological commentary for preachers was developed for the book of Jonah and a subsequent four-week expository sermon series was preached. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for the developing, communicating, understanding, and applying of a biblical text, a selfadministered pretest and posttest survey was developed and distributed to volunteer participants which focused on both the content and applicational weight of the book. It was hypothesized that by the utilization of pericopal theology, a christiconic hermeneutic, and the subsequent preaching of an expository sermon series, there would be measurable growth in (1) knowledge of the biblical text, (2) understanding of the theology of the biblical text, and (3) discernment of the divine demand placed upon God’s people through the biblical text. The instrument provided quantitative data that was analyzed and evaluated and which, ultimately, verified all three hypotheses affirming that the utilization of pericopal theology and a christiconic hermeneutic demonstrates an associated and significant increase in biblical knowledge, theological understanding, and applicational discernment among the participants."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130101657632768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:15.293Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
