A four-session training event focusing on the historical, literary, and theological dimensions of biblical interpretation aided in achieving this goal.  A 16-page interpretive guide was created and utilized to assist lay people in the process of accuracy and understanding. Evaluative questionnaires were employed to ascertain understanding and growth. The leader used the socratic (open-ended questioning) method to enable participants to expand their awareness of the power of Scripture in their personal lives. A process was provided for daily prayer and meditation between sessions.  Sessions included meditation, writing in a journal, responding to questions, dialogue in small groups and becoming biblical characters.  Most participants found the model helpful in deepening their awareness of and relationship with others, including God. This requires an understanding of the Bible and skill in relating biblical truth to the cultural context.  The objective of this thesis is to develop a program of study to assist the preacher to analyze and interpret Scripture and to prepare a sermon through the exposition of a passage of Scripture.  Its design is for persons lacking knowledge of biblical languages, exegetical skills and possessing a limited educational background.  The self-study workbook emphasizes a cognitive-discovery and skill development approach based on programmed instruction techniques. The thesis tested was whether literature can be used more effectively than traditional Bible study to change attitudes of class participants.  Three groups were tested: a class reading Will D Campbell's The Glad River, a Bible study group looking at biblical themes of community, and another class serving as a control group.  An identical questionnaire was administered before and after the studies, and the responses were compared and evaluated.
