Wisdom of Solomon","Criticism, interpretation, etc","Dead Sea scrolls","Wisdom literature","Sermon on the mount"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper will seek to demonstrate the cohesiveness between wisdom literature in the Hebrew Bible and the Matthean Sermon on the Mount, particularly as it regards the concept of blessedness resulting from living in the way of covenantal wisdom. It will also consider possible influences on the manner of presentation of the Sermon occurring through developments in theology and literature during the Second Temple period. Examples of potential influences will include two books from the Apocrypha, Ben Sira and Wisdom of Solomon, and a selection from the Dead Sea Scrolls. It will use the book of Proverbs as an anchor for discussion of biblical wisdom and show cohesiveness through wisdom themes. Eating, drinking, and enjoyment represent communal practices that counteract the social fragmentation of living under hegemonic bureaucracy. Central to this argument is a fresh understanding of Qoheleth that is developed out of the sage's own socio-historical context as illustrated by his use of bureaucratically and economically evocative language.  Qoheleth's commendations function to re-orient the reader toward simple practices that contrast imperial values.
