Brueggemann's 1984 work on the Psalms is compared to modern grief theory and used to develop a sermon series and Bible study.  The range of emotions expressed in the Psalms parallels the emotions experienced by a person facing death.  Congregation pre- and post-tests were administered to measure changes in anxiety.  Interview instruments were developed to measure the effectiveness of the sermons and Bible study series. The project also included the efforts of a project steering committee that sought to explore the plurality of the worshiping community through the use of oral interviews. Although there is an emphatic picture of the 'net' and 'pits' of sin, there also is a stronger message of salvation (wholeness). The lament psalms are most effective in providing expressions of hopelessness, anger, fear, guilt, and hope within the context of faith.  Their concept of wholeness is substantiated by contemporary scientific research.  The church needs to take its part in this emerging discovery of its own ancient world. Such sermons also use the original search for meaning that each Psalm represents to help today's Christian community invoke God's presence in our joy and crises.  Parish feedback groups and processes indicate that the Psalms sermons provide new insights for lay ministry and spiritual development as well as for significant collegial involvement. Being aware of the importance of musical expression, the author, a pastor and musician, compiled The Richmond Psalter.  Intended as an introduction to psalmody for those with little background, it contains musical settings for 28 psalms.  Each psalm is introduced by brief commentary regarding its formal structure and theological implications. The Study Guide designed by the author for this project report was used in a group of eight persons.  The Study Guide was structured to assist the participants in a learning process towards growth.  It was a learning process that merged the cognitive (empirical knowledge of six selected Psalms) with the affective (the participant's feelings while responding to the emotional utterances of the psalmist).  It was a learning experience that proved to be different for most of the participants in that it was a spiritual growth experience. This praxis provided times of corporate worship guided by the Psalms, as well as teaching and devotional writing from the Psalms, presented in such a way to foster greater understanding of the Psalter and facilitate psalm-based prayer.
