There are three supporting perspectives: 1) Dietrich Bonhoeffer: the church is Christ's presence in the world; preaching must convey the risen Christ present in the assembly. 2) Alexander Schmemann: preaching incarnates the word as a sacramental event revealing God's presence. 3) Richard Lischer: preachers must preach Jesus, not about him. Grounded in the unique message of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, Christian preaching partners with theology, as they are mutually supportive. In two workshops with a total of 26 persons, the project assigns participants to read Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton, or Surprised by Joy by C S Lewis. Each participant must read all of one of the works and parts of the other two. As they work through these texts participants compose a spiritual autobiography, outlining it at the beginning and completing it for presentation at the end of the workshop. Writing a spiritual autobiography becomes an excellent way for these Christians to understand their pilgrimages. These included Bible study, covenant group commitment, spiritual discipline, liturgy and ethical reflection.  These forms were focused on grace and themselves constituted means of grace.  By examining closely where they have fallen into cheap grace and where they are called to receive and embody God's costly grace, participants significantly enhanced their understanding of God's grace in their lives. The pastoral task presented in this project is to guide individuals through a lifetime of experience through liturgy, teaching and preaching in which they face the reality of death in nonthreatening ways.  This process frees parishioners to live apart from the fear of death. Examples of spiritual guides who have achieved that freedom are St Monica, St Bernard of Clairvaux, Martin Luther, John Arndt, Paul Gerhardt, J S Bach, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Justification by faith is a social event that joins believers to one another in the saving death and resurrection of Jesus, enabling them to 'welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you'.  Reconciliation between the strong and the weak in Romans illustrates the way in which Christ's sacrifice is to be a paradigm for suffering love within the diverse body of Christ.
