The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire. Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control). The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples. It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits. There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator. The pressure of working with people of another culture, and the lack of social and cultural resources are especially significant items."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135060582203392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:45:04.492Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:38:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:56:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4d5465c2-61d2-40cd-89f9-960af9130923","accessControl_ssim":["a80fd412-3aa8-4e3d-a2f0-836d98088360"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Male ministerial burnout"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:38:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:24:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fbf091ca-8286-4a48-9008-3feeb6ad73bc"],"hasLease_ssim":["3a80ea06-ee3a-4678-bb8a-c8f6ddf3a713"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Wayne E Barr"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James C Dunaway"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Psychology","Burn out (Psychology)","Workshops (Adult education)","Psychological tests","Clergy--Mental health"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project developed a workshop model which can be used by small groups of male clergy to explore the phenomenon of burnout. It challenges assumptions and establishes a theological and psychological rationale for church loyalty, setting forth a detailed, systematic definition which delineates three degrees of church loyalty, identified as eros (self-gratification), philia (approval of community), and agape (sacrificial) types of loyalty, and sharply distinguishing the absence of loyalty from disloyalty which is viewed as destructive and unresponsive. Behavioral models of unloyalty and the stresses that test their loyalty are delineated, including so-called 'burnout.' loyalty development in the biblical communities and the researches of church motivational authorities are combined into a suggested program to elicit loyalty and an experiment involving the application of this treatment in a local church setting is reported with the result that preventive measures show promise of developing loyalty and fortifying church members against the pressures that test it."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718492520316928,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:35:03.078Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:43:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:51:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8a85ae0e-d779-493c-b87c-d4be2849449c","accessControl_ssim":["c33d4dd5-cee8-48ae-a360-678c48ae06a2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The 'noonday devil': managing clergy burnout and the sin of acedia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:43:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:11:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["71ae6dd2-6b1b-4f14-8278-c2b1608ae507"],"hasLease_ssim":["25d65d0b-06bc-4662-86bb-2f3abc89fccb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tibor Chikes"],"year_tesim":["1983"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The project provides a spiritual direction setting in which interdenominational clergy can: understand burnout as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual phenomenon and relate it to their lives; understand the sin of acedia and grasp the need for forgiveness; and explore some of the preventive and curative measures with a special emphasis on spiritual formation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719503068659712,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:51:06.811Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:30:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e9c98338-c406-47c7-84b5-e502e1b9ac1a","accessControl_ssim":["171132a0-8bc2-4cb1-ba94-e36eb18bf609"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Stress and burnout in the priesthood"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:49:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b753b0e7-6f1c-4e76-9bed-3a8f4c5eeef2"],"hasLease_ssim":["0ae7038c-250c-473c-adb6-899a67b884ac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Gerald Fath"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Vocation, Ecclesiastical","Burn out (Psychology)","Priests, Catholic"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Stress and burnout are phenomena that particularly apply to the priesthood because of expectations of the church, family, society, peers and the person himself. The priest as a helping professional is often symbolically given god-like power to heal, help, guide, console, counsel and affirm. This paper analyzes the role of the priest as a professional helper called by God and examines his dealing with stressful, vocational demands. Role expectations must be integrated with capabilities; otherwise, being all things to all people usually leads to stagnation, frustration and apathy, the successive stages of burning out. The emotional demands of risking, reaching out and touching the people of God on a deep interpersonal level can lead to wholeness/holiness, or to destruction. If stress is not dealt with creatively, the body, mind and soul are dis-eased. Especially serious is stress on the heart. However, with creative power one can channel stress to yield an abundant harvest in the vineyard of the Lord. Risks involved in being the servant of servants include dying to self so that the new life of the Resurrection becomes a reality witnessed in word and deed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134173759537152,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:58.752Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":45,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
