The author, using a qualitative approach to his research, focuses on examining the effects of stress and burnout in the pastorate by concentrating in the areas of the pastor, the pastor's family, and the pastor's congregation. With some 1500 pastors leaving the ministry each month, the findings of this research reveals the majority of pastors understand their stress levels to be increased but very few are doing anything preventative. Two groups were formed by self-selection from the Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio tristate area of the Church of God (Anderson). One group participated in an anger-reduction workshop and the other group served as a control group. Levels of anger and burnout were measured in both groups before and after the workshop intervention. Classic hostility and anger studies over the past five decades served as the foundation for the study. From the discovery of Type A behavior in the 1950s, research has identified anger (hostility), along with stress, as primary factors in coronary heart disease. Developing from this base, the study measured the effect of the Lifeskills intervention on anger reduction, and its relationship to the slowing of burnout. The study revealed a significant positive correlation between the reduction of anger and burnout. Although the study sample represents only 3.9% of the total population, a trend is indicated that begs further investigation. The Lifeskills intervention workshop proved moderately successful in raising self-awareness, offering practical and usable coping strategies, and helping participants to reduce their level of anger, as well as their level of burnout. A more representative sampling of the population is called for to discover whether the results of this study are consistent with that population."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134405471764480,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:34:39.730Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:07:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:33:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"79c57f66-7fd0-4637-92a9-9a846e485e42","accessControl_ssim":["ca601047-932b-47e6-b8d5-3a99144348aa"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The impact of sabbaticals on burnout precursors and tenure among Nazarene clergy in the United States"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:07:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:43:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["175d1ca6-e22a-41ba-bda9-d5faf388796f"],"hasLease_ssim":["74d88767-505e-489e-b0c0-8c67d6a5e83c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard L Gray"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James Phillip Fuller"],"keyword_tesim":["Clergy--Tenure"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Leaves of absence","Clergy--Psychology","Clergy","Burn out (Psychology)","Church of the Nazarene"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Ministers, local churches, and denominations are confronted by a dilemma. What impact did that appropriation have on the experience of pastoral burnout? The seven male volunteers experienced burnout while serving as pastors in Wesleyan denominations. Analysis of the data from the questionnaires and open-ended interviews revealed six primary findings: 1) Wesleyan theology has not been fully appropriated; 2) certain Wesleyan theological interpretations contributed to burnout; 3) Wesleyan theology can be a preventive to burnout; 4) a lack of appropriation of Wesleyan theology in early years contributed to burnout; 5) Wesleyan theology points to divine resources to minimize the impact of burnout; and 6) Wesleyan theology points to divine resources for healing after burnout."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Boston University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2d58bd09-76d0-4970-b257-d55229e0173e"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714848853983232,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:08.207Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:23:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dc425e5c-8444-4328-a131-089b2837bab9","accessControl_ssim":["e0ada96f-aaa2-4a93-9241-dca65eabd983"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral burnout and renewal in Seventh-day Adventist ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:23:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:25:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["236f46a2-3621-4cf1-8dc7-e5f9185d3808"],"hasLease_ssim":["8a9bbb64-95d2-411b-81dc-21a516e92446"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Cormode"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ivan L Williams"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Psychology","Burn out (Psychology)","Seventh-Day Adventists--Clergy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is born out of the writer's sixteen-year journey in pastoral ministry. It is written from research, survey observation, and personal experience. Pacing oneself, balancing personal life, and finding the appropriate priority of vocation are daily concerns in the sojourn of Seventh-Day Adventist pastors. Imbalance among these priorities often results in frustration, discouragement, and even burnout. Although pastoral burnout is real in most denominations, the potential causes of burnout among Seventh-day Adventist pastors is viewed in light of their unique history, mission, and organizational structure. This project seeks to identify potential causes of burnout in pastoral ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It also discusses methods of burnout prevention and ways Adventist pastors can renew themselves. The examination of the potential causes of burnout in Seventh-day Adventist pastoral ministyr may be first related to the pastor's inappropriate response to the great gospel commission. The Adventist pastor's sense of personal or general church mission may be inappropriate or unrealistic. Second, burnout among pastors is related to their inability to find a balance in relationship to conference, congregation, community, and home life. This inevitably will cause personal dilemmas that may be internal and/or external. Third, burnout is related to the pastor's ability or inability to handle relational conflict. Understanding potential causes of burnout, and recognizing its signs and symptoms are essential to its prevention, and equally essential in the restoration of pastors who have become its victims. Therefore, in order to avoid burnout it is essential that the Adventist pastor be made aware of its potential causes. Those who have suffered burnout should understand the healing aspects of renewal, for restoration and revival."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132219673149440,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:55.189Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:27:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:20:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04a4398c-5b9d-4cff-8e47-15a19e0a07f8","accessControl_ssim":["c0854974-12cf-4103-969f-58536f2473bd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A seminar for emotionally exhausted pastors of the Canadian Christian and Missionary Alliance"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:27:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:15:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1708dd7a-7c57-441d-9213-e10bdb61bd70"],"hasLease_ssim":["88357e69-97d9-4edd-b93a-d505c03c1486"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven W Klipowicz"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Warren D Reeve"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian and Missionary Alliance","Burn out (Psychology)","Clergy--Mental health"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes and prepares a six-part seminar designed to prevent emotional exhaustion among pastors of the Canadian Christian and Missionary Alliance and to help them recover and find healing from its effects.
