Working from a meaning orientation, an integrating modality is developed following Erikson's theory in which the polarities of the final stage are seen as ego integrity or despair.  As the past is reviewed the meaning of various situations and events can be reorganized and reintegrated into a more valid picture, giving new meaning to one's life and allowing the sense of ego integrity. Some of the writings of Teresa of Avila illustrate this.  Elderhood, seen as the culminating point of the life journey, is set against the myths and stereotypes which demean this stage of life.
