We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin.  In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. The thesis/text is divided into two parts which address the sociological and theological dimensions of the church, respectively.  Part one deals with the context of the church in America, the development of denominationalism, and the church and culture in terms of the church as a product of culture.  Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr.  The thesis/text suggests that our understanding of the church is best expressed in dialectical terms.  God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response. The tape is a practical tool for churches interested in learning new hymns and responses. guitar accompaniments on the tape can help those who want to learn how to sing with the instrument.  Brief instructions and commentary are offered between each of the musical selections.  The paper gives an historical and theological rationale for the use of folk music and guitar in worship.  It proposes guidelines and makes suggestions as to the best way a congregation can utilize this approach.
