In order to test this thesis, Roman Catholic neophytes and 243 coordinators were surveyed.  Theological reflection on the responses to the survey and subsequent interviews held with people who are implementing the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults point up the responsibility that parish leaders have to engender the communities of empowerment similar to the small communities of the early church. The author sets forth underlying theological assumptions and looks at the catechumenate in its present form by journeying with one group of catechumens and sponsors from the precatechumenate in January 1982 to the celebration of Confirmation on Easter Sunday, April 1983.  Examined closely are the various stages of the RCIA: precatechumenate, catechumenate, special preparation (Lent) and mystagogy. Monthly teaching sessions, catechumen group meetings, sponsor catechumen sessions, service projects, liturgical rites, and Christian Living Days are treated.  The role and ministry of catechumens, sponsors, catechists, liturgical ministers, and catechumenate team are considered in turn. Appropriate training in this dimension of ministry will help them to relate better to parishioners on a variety of levels, to mainain objectivity as counselors and to avoid pitfalls in their counseling ministry.  One forum where pastoral counselng can be very helpful is the Roman Catholic Catechumenate, reinstituted by the Second Vatican Council. This present study describes the manner in which such a program was designed and executed in a local parish.  Five case studies reveal the scope of the problems and issues which can complicate such an undertaking, and they further demonstrate how competent and adequate pastoral counseling can be very satisfying and rewarding for the catechumen and priest-counselor
