Research from several United States Catholic dioceses has shown that parishioners desire to hear engaging homilies when they go to Mass. This author holds that reading a short story a week inspires preachers to adopt short-story traits for their preaching, like unity, brevity, and open-endedness, all of which captivate listeners.This project’s intervention involved qualitative research with five preachers from the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres in the southern United States. These preachers were asked to read short stories for twenty-six weeks and to allow their preaching to be evaluated approximately once a month for six months to see if their homilies would become more captivating. In this blind study, the preachers were not cued on what to look for in short stories, and the evaluators were not informed that the preachers were reading short stories. The goal was to see if reading short stories alone was enough to make homilies more captivating.The results from the twenty-six-week intervention showed no clear evidence that reading short stories helped preachers preach captivating homilies, except maybe in the case of one preacher who was already preaching narratively before the intervention began. What is clear from the intervention, however, is that narrative preaching is exceptionally good at captivating people. Further testing is warranted, with such corrections as taking a longer time frame to measure the effects of reading short stories and as preachers being informed about the nature of the intervention and the genre of short stories. As the universal Church enters its third millennium of existence, magisterial leaders are calling upon communities of faith to discern the mission of Catholic institutions and their role in serving God’s Church and the world. If Catholic schools are to be successful in their mission, it is critical that clerical and lay school leaders align on what is meant by the term “Catholic identity” as well as identify shared characteristics of Catholic identity in faith-based school communities. With this in mind, several questions are raised: What, exactly, defines the identity and work of a “Catholic” school in contemporary times? Can interpretation of “Catholic identity” differ from one school to another? Who has the authority to set benchmarks for Catholic school identity? In what ways can Catholic identity be quantitatively measured to advance school improvement and deepen alignment to the mission of the Church? To what extent can we really know if our efforts to share the Gospel through Catholic education are successfully contributing to the mission of the modern Church? Wesley belongs not only to the Methodist churches, but the Holy Catholic Church of which all Protestants are members and are indebted to him for the powerful influence of his wonderful personality. And undoubtedly the Roman Catholic Church has been influenced by the movement, but there will be little time to deal with this fact, except in a general way. It is the object of this essay to trace the contributions of this magnificent beacon light down through the centuries. Our endeavor may be logically divided into two parts. After giving a brief account of his life through his conversion experience, we shall concentrate our interest on Wesley's influence during his earthly pilgrimage. In the second division we shall follow his influence from the time of his death up to the present time. This prominent diocese offers a unique base for the study of this significant position for women that has emerged in the Post-Vatican II Church. The project examines the well-being and morale of women pastoral associates, compares their progress from 1980-1991, and investigates their perception of the support they receive.The methodology comprises: personal background and historical leadership role of Maryland: a theological foundation for women in ministry from the perspective of systemic grieving and transformation; an overview of the development of the ministry in the Baltimore diocese; a twofold appraisal of pastoral associates comparing the 1980 Simmons' survey and an updated 1991 questionnaire with corollary assessments and interviews with bishops, pastors, parishioners, and diocesan personnel.The group surveyed were active members of the Pastoral Associates Association whose background, until recently, has been predominantly women religious. Survey results point toward changes in duties and responsibilities from earlier experiences of direct involvement in visiting parishioners to training parish ministers and more programmatic and pastoral leadership activities. Acceptance from parish and community groups have steadily increased while there have been varying degrees of support from bishops in the diocese. The work is viewed as satisfying and as an opportunity to use abilities creatively in a responsible position; yet, conversely, there is recognition of the position's flat career path. Although pastoral associates see their ministry from the perspective of Church as Servant, nevertheless, they desire equal partnership in ministry and a model of Church as Community of Disciples. This research explores how women in the Roman Catholic Church may be enabled to change their understanding and attitudes to claim a unique form of power within the Church's structure through education, discussion and small group interaction.The method followed in this research took the design of a seminar. The methodology used involved a series of seven two-hour seminar sessions. Each seminar included education on topics related to women's issues in the Church: Women's culture and Spiritual Origins, Scripture and Spirituality, Power, Patriarchy and Sexism and Family of Origin. The format of the sessions included input, discussion, sharing,journaling, experiential activity and ritual. Reading assignments were taken from updated materials written by women researchers, theologians and scripture scholars. Eleven women from the ages of 32 to 65 from a white suburban local Catholic Church participated in the project. Their marital status, education, theology background and family of origin varied. At the initial session, each participant filled out three formulated questionnaires related to (a) Women's status within the Church, (b) self-esteem and (c) feelings regarding power. All these questionnaires were re-administered at the end of the course to evaluate whether any major changes took place. The most powerful instrument for women in this study occurred in the more intimate form of a personal interview where the opportunity of an in-depth sixty to ninety minute conversation with each participant took place three months following the seminar's termination. These interviews focused on seven questions relative to the seminar's objectives: (1) To what extent did the participants exhibit a heightened awareness and enthusiasm? (2) How have the participants' views of empowerment been affected by the seminar?
